A new study in the Brazilian Amazon confirms a 54% increase in deforestation in the last ten months compared to the previous period.

The last fifty years have represented a cost of deforestation never before seen in the history of mankind, devastating 15% of the world's vegetation surface equivalent to the territory of Spain, Portugal and France. Now, a new study warns about the loss of 4,567 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest in the last ten months: 54% more than the previous period.

Last May has the second highest rate of deforestation in the last decade: the Amazon lost 649 square kilometers of native forest, according to the Deforestation Alert System of the Institute of Man and the Environment of the Amazon (Imazon).

The main cause of this continuous increase in the exploitation of forests lies in the increase in the consumption of meat and the consequent expansion of extensive livestock farming, as well as the cultivation of soybeans and the creation of pastures for livestock. Only Brazil, the country that is home to most of the Amazon rainforest, has transferred more than 60 million animals to this region, which has fueled the international debate on who to decide on the largest lung on the planet.

In this line, our diet is at the key point of what is happening in the Amazon. The expansion of livestock and soy cultivation is due to the international demand for meat and feed that the industry needs to feed the animals that are part of our diet.

Among the consequences, deforestation in Brazil has increased by almost 30% between 2018 and 2019, and is one of the main causes of CO2 emissions in the country. In the 1990s, this jungle absorbed 2,000 million tons of CO2, which according to data from  Greenpeace  now they translate to half.

The six million square kilometers of the Brazilian Amazon make up two-thirds of the remaining forest and, spread over eight countries, it is home to more than 35 million people. However, none of the Amazonian peoples respects their peoples and protects the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet as they should.

In addition to its direct impact on biodiversity and endemic species, especially rich in rainforest ecosystems, logging exposes these lands to a much greater impact from tropical storms that devastate the soil and its nutrients.

Cause of the appearance of zoonotic diseases

Some experts point out that deforestation of more than 20% will mean a point of no return for the environment, climate change and the massive extinction of species. "70% of human diseases are caused by the destruction of nature," says a new pandemic in the covid-19  report  of WWF, which includes deforestation and habitat destruction, land use change, as well as unsustainable intensification of animal production as some of the main causes of risk.

"New zoonotic diseases are emerging at an alarming rate, driven by the breakdown of the link between humans and nature," says the organization. The report, released on June 17, highlights the urgency of a  New Agreement for Nature and People  that protects nature and, therefore, human health.

Among the great threats facing this ecosystem are also the large hydroelectric projects that are carried out in the valuable rivers of the Amazon basin, such as the dams of the Tapajos river basin, home of the Mundurukú tribe. Electric companies and the tropical timber market also do business from destroying the rainforest. Spain is one of the largest importers of Amazonian tropical wood and the fourth largest importer of ipé wood in the world, "contributing not only to the destruction of the Amazon but also to the invasion of indigenous territories or slave labor," says Greenpeace.

"We must curb the trade and high risk consumption of wildlife, stop deforestation and land conversion, and manage food production sustainably," said Marco Lambertini, WWF Director General in a statement from press. “All of these actions will help prevent the spread of pathogens to humans and will also address other global risks to our society, such as loss of biodiversity and climate change. There is no debate, the science is clear ”.
